Instagram Celebrity about to find out if crimes truly pays
He is the King of PepperDem (a Nigerian street lingo for one is envied). Raymond (Ramon) Igbalodely (aka HushPuppi), was one of the unknown quantity until he exploded into social view as a king of social media.
He is known for flaunting his wealth and showing off his possessions: watches, cars, clothes, holiday trips to exotic locations, and lunches/dinners with stars and models. He once posted a video of himself hopping into a chopper “for lunch with some models”.
The social media space that he loves so much was his undoing, as it exploded earlier this week with the sensational news of his arrest, by the FBI. The arrest is said to be in connection with multi-million dollar internet fraud schemes, some involved the fraudulent diversion of money meant for the purchase of equipment and gadgets to fight the deadly coronavirus pandemic, which has led to the death of more than 100,000 in the USA.
Just like the source of the wealth he flaunts on social media, not much is known about HushPuppi’s background, parenthood or profession. He is a conundrum; he once likened his story to one that started from grass and ended in grace. He apparently did not see the disgrace of being smoked out of his porch Versace apartment in Dubai on Tuesday, June 9, along with another (less famous) Instagram celeb, simply known as Mr Woodberry.
He describes himself as a Real Estate Developer. Yet, he has never posted of a photograph of closing any legitimate deal, and this to many, is strange for someone who advertises everything he does, from shopping for shoes to the food he eats. The estates he flaunts are those in Dubai, where he live and takes pictures to further pepper his opponents.
He means different things to different people: He is severally referred to as Nigeria’s Richest Yahoo Boy (internet fraudster); to those who have benefited from his give-aways and his fellow socialites, he is a philanthropist.
He is a man hated and loved almost in equal measures by his friends and foes. The later look up to him as a model of rag-to-rich story; his traducers see him as the reason why hardworking Nigerians are not appreciated enough.
He was subject of ‘Telli Person’, a hit track by trio of Timaya, Phyno and Olamide. The song was a diss for his criticism of some Nigeria celebrities, who he says wear replicas of luxury watches.
The video of the heavily downloaded song features a dog (puppy) garbed Gucci apparel (one of HushPuppi’s favourite fashion label). The song warned him of deadly consequences for his activities.”
You nor get work, you just de show money oo … you follow Gucci ooo I tell you, you nor gree, Them tell you, you nor hear. When you eyes go clear ooo”.…Phyno, Olamide, Timaya
His brushes have not only being with musci stars. One of his fiercest rival for public attention is Ismaila Mustapha (Mopha), who is facing a crisis of his own in the form of trial by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Mopha has been trapped in Nigeria because of his travail, but he left a cheeky remark on his Instagram page on Thursday.
“Never cry for the person who hurt you,” he said.
Puppi owns a collection of watches that would make many superstars green with envy. In March 2019, he posted a photo on a $150,000 Richard Mille watch hugging his left wrist, with the time “God’s time is the best, especially when you checking it from a $150,000 watch.” Earlier in 2018, he posted a diamond-studded Baguette watch.
His shady source of wealth has not stopped him from getting invitations to ‘A’ list social gatherings. From being a guest of Nigeria’s Number 4 Citizen, the Speaker of the House of Representative, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila, to being accepted as a trophy supporter of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 Nigeria’s presidential election, he moves with the roller and shakers of the society.
He is not a local champion either. Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Phillip Patek and Versace, among other dealers of luxurious goods, have thrown their doors open to the HushPuppi and oodles of dollars he spends on exquisite accessories and clothings.
Luxury carmakers like Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Bentley and Mercedes Benz know him for his taste in such cars. He recently splashed nearly $400,000 on a Rolls Royce Cullinan, the full-sized SUV model named after the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem-quality rough diamond ever discovered.
His fleet include a White RR Wraith (Reg No. Dubai: 9735), which he recently repainted purple, after the arrival of his Cullinan; a $220,000 Bentley Bentayga (Dubai W 78571); Mercedes Maybach, Ferrari, and Mercedes Benz Brabus (Dubai G 68816).
As his supporters, 2.3million Instagram followers, critics and watchers await the latest from this saga, it is certain that the last has not been heard of the “Real Estate Developer”.
