A prominent traditional ruler, the Paramount Ruler of Akpor Kingdom, Obio-Akpor local government area of Rivers State, Eze Anele Orlu-Oriebe Nye-Wey Ali IX, reportedly died from coronavirus complication on Monday.
Although the exact complication that triggered the 64-year-old monarch’s death was yet to be revealed, he was summarily buried without fanfare, on the directive of Governor Nyesom Wike, at the Port Harcourt Cemetery.
“The Governor insisted that the first-class traditional ruler died from COVID-19, and so insisted that his remains be buried immediately, without traditional rites,” a usually reliable source in the state told our reporter.
“The Rivers State government has buried the King of Akpor Kingdom, Eze Anele Orlu Oriebe at Port Harcourt Cemetery.”
“Gov Wike personally led the operation with operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) to evacuate the deceased from Military Mortuary Port Harcourt where his remains were deposited. “
“He was thereafter buried at Port Harcourt Cemetery on the order of Governor Nyesom Wike, who linked the monarch’s death to Coronavirus.”
Meanwhile, it was gathered that the action of the government has created problems in the kingdom, as the monarch was reportedly interred along with his symbol of office, the traditional bead.”
“The Traditional beads which they transfer from Generation to Generation has not been removed from the late King and was buried together with it.”
“The Akpor People is currently holding consultations and are expected to state their position on (next) Monday.”
Niger Daily News learnt that the late monarch was appointed as a first-class traditional ruler by Rivers State government on the 7th of October 2013, and worked assiduously for the maintenance of peace and order int eh kingdom and Obio-Akpor LGA.
He was the author of the popular book, “the Traditional Administrative System and Land Management in Akpor Kingdom, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State.”
