There is panic in Ohafia area of Abia State after rampaging gunmen attacked, killed a policeman and injured four others on Monday afternoon.

Sources said the gunmen swooped on the policemen during a heavy downpour around Okagwe bus stop, and opened fire on them.

“They were hiding from the rain when the attack took place,” a police source at Umuahia revealed.

The leader of the team, an inspector, died at the spot, while others sustained varying degrees of gunshot wound.

Reports that the policemen’s firearms were carted away could not be independently verified.

The state police command was yet to officially comment on the incident, but the state government confirmed the attack.

Commissioner for Information, Mr. John Okiyi-Kalu said the state, said the incident was being investigated.

“Preliminary information suggests that a gang of about 12 yet to be identified hoodlums suddenly attacked five police officers.”

“The government wishes to advice all medical facilities in the state to report any patient who presents with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station,” he added
