The anti-police protest (#ENDSARS) across Nigeria took a dangerous twist in Benin City, Edo State on Monday morning as protesters march on the Benin Correctional facility (prison) and free prisoners.
Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the police in Nigeria had morphed into a terror group that robbed, killed and maimed citizens at will, leading to the protests for its disbandment across the country.
The Benin unit of the protest has witnessed clashes between hoodlums and protesters, which has led to the death of at least three protesters.
Several units and stations of police has also being pillaged or burnt.
Eyewitness said the correctional facility on Sapele road was invaded by the gang, who overpowered security operatives and set prisoners free.
It was learnt that the protesters are then marching to the Oko Maximum Prison for similar action.
Naija Daily News findings revealed that the attempt to replicate the action in Benin could lead to bloodbath, especially with huge police and soldiers presence in the said facility.
A source said, “They (soldiers) will not allow them break into Oko prison, not with military presence in that axis plus it is a maximum security prison.
“I pray the boys see reason,” our source added.
There were concerns last week that the Benin protest was being taken over rogues, who infiltrated the peaceful protesters, ostensibly to achive their aim.
“Some of those involved might be people who have prisoners they want to release from prison,” another source added.
